HURRICANE TOMAS
In 2010 Curaçao experienced its most extreme rainfall in 40 years; as many as 10.4 inches (265 mm) were recorded over a 24-hour period on the eastern part of the island. The majority of the rain fell overnight in a heavy downpour, accompanied by a severe thunderstorm that triggered large-scale power outages. Lightning strikes sparked three large fires in the oil refinery in Willemstad. Curaçao also suffered some of its worst flooding in history; insured losses across the island exceeded US$63 million, though total damage costs from Tomas were estimated at US$115 million.
