Discussions for a permanent connection between Punda and Otrobanda started in the 1930s.

As a result of the booming oil refinery, increased shipping, and heavy traffic, serious traffic jams were caused on the “Handelskade” (one of the most prominent quays at the harbor). Delays because of traffic jams could run up to 45 minutes. Various plans for a permanent bridge across the St. Annabaai or even a tunnel under it, were made between 1946 and 1961.

The 1961 design of the bridge was finally approved.

Construction began in 1962. In 1964 the 50 steel sections of the bridge were built in the Netherlands and shipped to Curaçao for assembly. After the construction of the concrete abutments, the mounting of the steel sections began in 1966. Construction started with the 25 sections on the Punda side.
